There’s something about India,” exclaimed Megan. “Despite being a country of a billion people, there’s a calmness underneath the perceived chaos. Braydon and I finally decided to take the plunge and come down here ourselves.”
Her words resonated with me as we found ourselves seated together on the grueling flight from Vancouver to New Delhi. Megan, her husband Braydon, and their group of friends were on a sojourn to discover the spirit of India. Led by their Indo-Canadian friend, Ashmit, they were set to traverse North India within a fortnight. “Surely, a trip to one of the spiritual cities would be on the itinerary?” I asked. “Ah! Yes, our first stop is Varanasi,” Megan responded effervescently.
As we bid each other farewell at the exit gate of Terminal 3, I felt inspired by my country's rich spiritual heritage. Taking a leaf from Ashmit’s book, I thought about compiling a list of must-visit spiritual destinations for the Megans and Braydons of the world—the seekers looking to unlock the divine within. Let this guide introduce you to the beautiful, varied spiritual labyrinths of India, infused with the aromas of sandalwood and chants of mantras, which are as ancient as this holy land.
